An Asset to My Community

I teach reading in a juvenile detention center. The students range from ages 10 to 20. Their average stay is 10 days. We used the Project-based-learning Anchor: "Pittsburgh is steadily growing and thriving. It's the site of much positive change. In a changing community, transitions occur in many ways. The shift will be a catalyst for change in the identity of the community. The residents want to be assured that their voices will be heard, and that they remain a viable part of the new identity. " The Driving Question was: "How can I be an asset to my community?" Students steered their projects in every direction from joining the army, to flipping houses, to cleaning parks. Presentations were made by poster, written paper, power point, speech, video, and even rap! Photo descriptions (L to R): Working on a project; Using the GoQuest software; and a Finished Project
